A Family Affair

Weddings are a family affair.

Family and friends, regardless of age, show up to celebrate a newly wedded couple through a colorful mixture of conversation, laughs, and dancing. The wedding DJ is the executant responsible for setting the tone of these interactions and providing purposeful sparks of energy to ensure everyone showers the bride and groom with positivity during their first evening officially together.

A top tier wedding DJ doesn’t just get party people on the dance floor, he or she gets EVERYONE on the dance floor!  The bride and groom thoughtfully considered each invite they sent out. Therefore, it is not up to the DJ to decide who gets to step into the spotlight on the dance floor and show moves often reserved only for the bathroom mirror.  Truly, the DJs only real responsibility is to delicately blend generations of hits, speeds, and tastes into a single soundtrack, representative of the mood of the evening, connecting the distinguished with the adolescent through song and dance.

A First of Many Lessons Learned

I was DJing a wedding a few months back and was about halfway through the evening when I started reflecting on how well everything was going.  The dance floor was packed with people who enthusiastically shouted every lyric to every song I had chosen to play.  As I prepared the transition to the next song, an older lady approached me and said, “We’ve been waiting all night to dance! Could you play a song for us?”  As she finished her sentence with a smile, she pointed over to the Bride and Groom’s family’s table where her husband and a few other member’s of the Bride’s family were seated.  I was talking to one of the most powerful people in the room, the Bride’s Grandma!

“Of course, I’ll play your song” I replied!  I shuffled through my lengthy list of slower grooves to find the perfect ballad for her and the rest of her table. To my surprise, the younger generation was thrilled with the surprise change of pace and showed off their appreciable knowledge of music history with the continued dominance of song lyrics.  The best part of the music throwback was watching the Bride make her way towards her grandmother and grooving together using a choreography clearly rehearsed through a lifetime of moments spent together.

I learned a valuable lesson that evening.  Just because the dance floor is packed with dancers doesn’t mean everyone is dancing.  A DJ needs to be cognizant of those both on the floor and off, and should carefully choose music that brings all who were deliberately chosen to attend, an opportunity to create new moments together.

If you are looking for a DJ to entertain your guests at your upcoming wedding make sure to find someone who understands the core responsibility of the role they play and the tone they set.  Your DJ needs to understand weddings are family affairs whether by blood or by relation.  At Bow Ty Audio our experience has taught us this valuable lesson and we take pride in the fact that we play all types of music to make sure every guest has a chance to dance.  As you plan your big day keep in mind the words from Mary J. Blige’s song, “Family Affair”:

“Let’s get it crunk, we gon’ have fun
Up on up in this dancerie
We got ya open, now ya floatin’
So you gots to dance for me
Don’t need no hateration, holleration
In this dancerie
Let’s get it percolatin’, while you’re waiting
So just dance for me”

Chantele & Anthony – Sunday Wedding

A Sunday Wedding

I’ve DJed my fair share of Sunday weddings – popular to what you might believe, they are great!  There’s an easy going feeling to Sunday weddings.  Saturday will always remain the supreme party night, but there’s something magical in celebrating on a Sunday afternoon. Couples often have a better chance of securing the perfect venue, photographer and/or DJ. To prove my point I’d like to share Chantele and Anthony’s perfect Sunday wedding.

The DJ’s Recap

That weekend I had two weddings, but fortunately, Austin, my second DJ, was there to help with both. Chantele and Anthony’s wedding was the second of the two on Sunday. The ceremony and reception took place at the amazingly beautiful Living Room in Omaha. The ceremony was outside with the Omaha skyline in the background.  A string duet provided by Star City Strings serenaded guests throughout the ceremony. Everything went flawlessly and just like that Anthony and Chantele became Mr. and Mrs. Coffman.

Austin introduced the bridal party as they walked out to “Omaha” by Counting Crows.  Guests enjoyed some drinks and good background music until mealtime which was provided by All Inclusive Catering.  After a delicious dessert and toasts from both sides, the celebration continued into the dance.

Bride & Father Dance: Wonderful Tonight

These friends and family sure knew how to have fun!  Guests danced, laughed and posed in front of a backdrop provided by Snap Omaha Photobooth.  Austin and I kept the vibe going strong all night.  Requested jams ranged from “Chantilly Lace” by The Big Bopper to “Hot in Herre” by Nelly.  Before we knew it, another stunning Sunday Wedding came to an end.

Mr & Mrs. Taylor – A Family Wedding

They say rain on your wedding day is good luck.  If that is the case, Stephanie and Tristan hit the jackpot!  Fortunately, the Taylor’s indoor wedding went unaffected by the weather.  Here is a quick recap of the day from the perspective of the DJ:

Nothing but warmth and love filled ChezSoDo, an event venue in Lincoln, Nebraska, as the ceremony began.  I was honored to play Pachelbel’s Canon on the piano as Stephanie walked gracefully down the aisle.  A friend of Tristan and Stephanie, Allysa Diehl, perfectly officiated the ceremony.  Having someone the couple knows officiate the ceremony is always fun to watch.  I believe it adds a touch of familiarity to the ceremony.  Once Stephanie and Tristan said “I do” they walked out to “Sign, Sealed and Delivered (I’m Your’s)” by Stevie Wonder.  Shortly after the couple made their initial walk as husband and wife, the cocktail hour and meal followed.  Good food and happy vibes filled the venue as the couple and their guests enjoyed a tasty dinner.

The Taylor’s chose the most perfect first dance song – “Make you Feel my Love” by Adele.  After the first dance, we picked up the pace with some family wedding jams and got everyone out on the dance floor!  Laughter and great dance moves soon followed.  As the DJ, I thoroughly enjoy being a part of a couple’s special day and it was no different this time!   By the end of the evening we slowed things down and I played “At Last” by Etta James to give the couple one more slow song to enjoy before the night was over.

While Bow Ty Audio was busy DJing the family wedding, Tara Groteluschen was busy snapping the photos.  She was gracious enough to share a few of her photos with us:

Mr. & Mrs. Delgado – A Bellevue, Nebraska Wedding

On May 5th, 2018 Dan and Brittany pronounced their love to one another and became Mr. & Mrs. Delgado.  I was touched when they requested Bow Ty Audio to come DJ in Bellevue, NE and be a part of their special day!

The whole wedding day took place at Falconwood Park near Bellevue, NE.  The ceremony was outside near the reception space.  Having an outdoor wedding in Nebraska during any month of the year is risky but thank goodness the ceremony went off without a hitch!  One of the memorable moments of the ceremony was when the bridal party walked out to “Jurassic Park” by Brooklyn Duo.

The reception and meal were held in a separate building where I had set up a PA system earlier that day for all the speeches.  Once folks were finished eating, we moved back outside to witness the first dances.  I had the pleasure of playing Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton for the Delgado’s first dance.  I work very hard to make sure the dance floor stays packed the entire night and I can gratefully say it was!  The rest of the evening was packed with singing, dancing, and all the great music hits!  Justin Barnes Photography was gracious enough to share a few photos from that evening – enjoy!
